Vankyo Leisure 3 portable projector review: A cheap, but crisp option for 90

Can your flat screen TV fit into a backpack? Can it change its screen size? Can it help you file your taxes? OK, well the Vankyo Leisure 3 LED projector can't help with IRS stuff, but it's got you covered when it comes to the first two points.
Measuring just eight inches on its longest side and weighing in at well under four pounds, this projector is portable enough to bring with you during commutes or travel and compact enough for use even in smaller spaces, like a dorm room or cramped apartment.
As for screen size, it can suit just about any space, from the aforementioned smaller quarters to the positively cavernous room. It creates a high-definition projection that can measure as small as 32-inches (remember that you always measure screen size along the hypotenuse, as it were, so from one lower corner to its opposing upper corner) or as large as 170 inches. I'll do the math for you: That's a 14-foot TV screen. Which is really a small movie screen at that point.
The Leisure 3 has built-in speakers that leave a bit to be desired, but it easily connects to external speakers for better sound quality.
As for the other types of devices you can connect to the projector, those include DVD players, game consoles, a Chromecast or Amazon Fire Stick, a computer, and so forth. It accepts HDMI, USB, VGA, and AV inputs, and controlling the projector's settings is easy using a few basic buttons set on top of the unit or an included remote control.
Achieving proper focus and keystone balance (mitigating the trapezoidal shape of the projection created by the angle of the hardware relative to the surface receiving the light, e.g.) is equally simple thanks to a pair of adjustment rings set right behind the lens itself. The 2000:1 contrast ratio looks great even in semi-dark rooms, while the fan noise is mitigated with suppression technology so you can actually hear what's going, too.
And now we come to the best part of the Vankyo Leisure 3: its price. You would be hard pressed to find a decent-quality 32" TV for less than that, and when it comes to a 14-foot TV, well forget about it.
The ironic thing here? I use this low priced, high-performance portable projector primarily for playing retro game consoles from the 80s and early 90s. Becuase while tech keeps improving, some of the classics are still just so good.
