No matter how many times you may have visited the French capital, there is always more to discover, with corners of the city that you’ve yet to explore. And with so many famous hotels to choose from, it is sometimes difficult to know where to start planning your adventure. However, if you’re in the market for a cute and cosy destination this winter, you won’t do any better than the Pavillon des Lettres.

Located in a beautifully quiet corner in central Paris, just near the Place de la Madeleine, the boutique 26-room hotel is a true hidden gem. Pavillon des Lettres is a wonderful celebration of French and international literature and is ideally located for exploration, whether it is your first or fourteenth trip to the city.

Here’s how to make the most of your time there.

Accommodation

As the name suggests, the hotel is a celebration of literature, a theme that is carried through in every part of the building. There are 26 rooms, one for each letter of the alphabet, and each is named after a different author, with the room (and the writing on the wall) decorated to reflect their work.

The literature experience kicks off as soon as guests check in as they are presented with a surprise book on arrival. The book is wrapped in brown paper and left on the bed to be read during (and after) their stay. And, if this ‘Blind Date with a Book’ wasn’t enough, guests can order more literature through room service throughout their stay, which is surely any bookworm's dream holiday, with everything from novels to comic books available to consume.

The rooms are cosy but not small, all decorated individually and feature great views of the beautiful Parisian streets below. As the hotel is not in a busy area, it tends to be quiet and peaceful right outside your window and makes for a truly idyllic stay.

Food and drink

There is a delicious breakfast buffet put on each morning filled with plenty of French treats to satisfy you – prepare to stuff yourself full of croissants and cheese as soon as you rise. But, if you want to have a truly lavish and lazy morning, order the breakfast to your room and enjoy your pastries and coffee in bed.

Although there is no restaurant for lunch or dinner located at the hotel (which actually adds to the quiet charm of the place), the team is more than happy to recommend and book eateries throughout your stay, depending on what you are after. It is also possible to order food from local restaurants through room service, just make sure to give the concierge plenty of notice.

As well as this, every afternoon, the hotel lays on drinks and snacks – everything from Champagne to cooked meats and plenty of cheeses – which are paid for through an honesty box. The beautiful lounge is the perfect setting to sit and read from the wide selection of books at the hotel or to just relax and chat by the fire with your fellow holidaymakers.

What to do

If, like us, you’re just as interested in fashion as you are in literature, we suggest you make time for a visit the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, where you can step into the life and work of the famous couturier.

The space tells the story of the designer from his early days at Christian Dior to opening his own atelier through to his death in 2008. The exhibition is filled with some of his most iconic and breathtaking designs that would impress anyone with even the smallest interest in fashion history. Speak to the hotel about booking queue-jump VIP tickets.
