So, What Do You Really Want?

May 14, 2007

Ah, Mother's Day. A day when I don't have to cook or clean up, and I can pick the menu. What mom wouldn't want to take advantage of that? For a brief moment yesterday, my mind jumped from thoughts of crab legs to hot rolls with butter to stuffed baked potatoes to chocolate cake…

And then I remembered my commitment. To myself. To this blog. And to you. I knew you'd be stopping by here today to share your own stories of how you made the most of Mother's Day (either as a mother, a daughter or both) while still keeping your weight-loss goals in mind. After all, what better gift can a woman give herself than a strong, healthy body?

And yet… A little splurge was definitely in order. So I asked myself, "What do Ireallywant?"

The answer was clear: crab legs. The big, meaty king crab legs from Costco, which cost so much less than a king crab dinner at a nice restaurant that I can dive into a pile of them without worrying about the family budget. (I mean, we're talking second-mortgage land whenever the restaurant menu says "market price" next to "crab legs.")

So we dined on crab, plain baked potatoes and steamed broccoli. (Well, Randy, who is not exactly Mr. Shellfish, threw a piece of beef on the grill for himself. But that meant more crab legs for Matthew and me! That's us in the photo. The crab legs were so hot, we couldn't hold them in our bare hands for the picture.) And yes, I did indulge and make a little melted butter with lemon for the crab. But I made a trade-off — butter on the crab = no buttered rolls, stuffed baked potatoes or fancy chocolate dessert.

On Ellie Krieger's list of "Usually," "Sometimes" and "Rarely" foods, listed in her book Small Changes, Big Results, crab legs, potatoes and broccoli are all "Usually" foods. And butter is a "Rarely" treat. Seems like a good ratio to me, especially on Mother's Day. So I happily dipped — but didn't dunk — my crab legs in that melted butter with lemon, and I didn't even miss that big hunk of chocolate cake.
