MS and the Pain of Pollen

MS can and does find its way into just about every part of our lives (bloody uninvited guest!), often in ways we don’t even realize.
Take the spring pollen season, for example.
I’m not one who suffers from hay fever or seasonal allergies. Now and again, however, that much “junk” in the air will bring on a day or two of damned powerful sneezes.
I’m one of those for whom hypersensitivity can be a symptom of multiple sclerosis; light touch, rough clothing scrapes and scratches can cause me exceptional, albeit temporary, pain.
As my friends complain of watery eyes, scratchy throats and runny noses, I prepare for sneeze reactions which will leave me looking like I’ve been TASERed!
Not every sneeze will set off this reaction, but when I have an “MS Sneeze” (why not; we have the MS Hug, MS Sleep, MS Brain…), my body tenses and I feel a burning pain sizzle its way down my nerves to every part of my body like a scalding water burn whose intensity seems to build to an excruciating crescendo before quickly fading away.
The level of pain is as high as I can imagine without passing out and I’ve even wet myself a bit once; not for the sneeze (I do my Kegals), but for the pain.
The first time I opened my eyes to see that Caryn had witnessed my torture is when I realized how bad it must look!
It doesn’t last long; I’d have to guess 10-12 seconds, but I can’t be sure. I’m so lost in the experience at the time that all I can do is ride the wave as it crashes to the shore and recedes leaving only hissing sand… and then silence (and relief that THAT is over!).
This has been a place where any of us can ask a question about anything MS related. Today I’d like to ask if anyone else has experienced this or anything like it.
If I’m alone, I’ll just take it as my own quirky bit of MS. If not… well it’s not going to change anything, really. It’s just nice, sometimes, to know you’re not alone.
Wishing you and your family the best of health.
