Does eating fat make you fat?

Not necessarily. There's nothing special about "fat" that packs on pounds: You gain weight when you eat more calories than you burn off, regardless of whether they're from fat, protein, or carbohydrates. Getting enough fat in your diet--the Institute of Medicine recommends that it make up 20 to 35% of calories--is essential for good health, but the type of fat matters. Most should be mono- or polyunsaturated, which help to lower cholesterol, inflammation, and belly fat. Limit saturated fats and avoid trans fats. Both kinds can cause health problems. --Stephanie Woodard
