A member of the Everyday Health Wellness Advisory Board, David Livingstone Smith,PhD, is a professor philosophy at the University of New England and the author ofLess Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others(2011), which was given the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for nonfiction. David has been interviewed and cited on numerous occasions in the national and international media and was a guest at the 2012 G20 economic summit, where he spoke about dehumanization and mass violence.

What are you working on now?

I'm working on a book entitled Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization, which will be published by Harvard University Press, and another book on dehumanization that will be published by Oxford University Press. Both should be out next year.

What have you learned about stress that you didn’t know or surprised you?

I don't research stress, so I can't in good conscience answer that.

What stresses you out?

A lot of things. Big stressors are the resurgence of authoritarian politics, racism, misogyny, global climate change, and environmental degradation. On a more personal level, growing older, lack of writing time, and overcommitment all stress me out.
