It's been six months since my colon cancer surgery, and my stomach muscles stick out oddly. Why does this happen? Will my stomach ever get flat? My doctor said the muscle separated and not to worry.
You may have developed a weakness in the abdominal muscles as a result of your surgery for colon cancer. The muscle tissue has to be cut through for the surgery to be done, and at times the muscle may not heal completely. The resulting muscle weakness causes the stomach to stick out.
It sounds as if your doctor feels there is no pressing medical concern, but if it bothers you from a cosmetic standpoint, you should consult with your physician again — or possibly get a second opinion — to see if it can be corrected surgically.
