In a world of trendy, high-priced, high-intensity fitness classes and hard-core races, walking—despite its ridiculously long list of benefits—hasn't always seemed that, well, cool. "Walking is something that we do every day, and a lot of people don't think much about it other than as a functional tool to get from point A to point B," says fitness expert Sarah Kusch. But things are changing, and walking's fly vibe is on the rise. Even multitasking millennials now prefer walking over driving to get around, according to a 2015 poll of 3,000 metro residents. "Some of us have found a deeper connection, use, or craving for it," says Kusch, who has fallen in love with the versatile movement over the past few years. "Personally, I'm always seeking out ways I can sneak it in throughout my day. I get to breathe, reflect, brainstorm, blow off stress, reconnect to nature—it's serious 'me' time." Totally agree? You stare in your closet and all that's looking back at you are five pairs of comfy sneakers, your workout gear, and a few flats or Dr. Scholl's that let you stroll for miles. Because that's your priority. You can toss some glitter on your tennis shoes, right?

Your GPS is set to walking

Then you realize that it's still set for WALKING directions, not driving, and breathe a sigh of relief. "I can't tell you how many times I've done this," laughs Kusch.

Driving feels awkward and becomes more of a hassle than hoofing it.

You avoid driving and even being in a car at all costs. "Why drive when you can walk?" is your motto. "At one point in my life, I lived in an area where everything was accessible by foot," says Kusch. (Here are 10 ways walking can change your life.) "When I finally needed my car one day, I couldn't even find it because it was so dusty! Once I located it, it had sat for so long that the battery was dead. I realized that I had chosen feet over a car for 6 months!"

Have you zoned out, only to snap back to reality with the thought, "Help, I'm lost!"? You're not alone. "This is definitely something a true walker can identify with, especially if you've ever walked in new terrain," says Kusch. "I once spent 6 hours lost in France! I thought I had it under wraps until I looked up and thought, 'Rue what??' In the end, it's part of the experience and opens the door to all kinds of people and places you never would have otherwise seen."

No shame singing and dancing

You have no shame singing and dancing on the sidewalk.

Have you been caught rocking out to your tunes? "I'm guilty as charged," says Kusch. "I'm sure people have thought I'm crazy, but I love not having a care in the world, jamming, and maybe even singing or breaking out a dance move." So go ahead: Get lost in your own world. It's part of walking's fun.
